Some projects don’t require a specific purpose or use. This project falls into that category. While I can think of various uses, such as creating a path or decorating a bag, I decided to embroider this Pride Flower simply for the joy of creating something. Additionally, it was the last piece of my challenge to complete one Pride-related craft each week during June. The other crafts I’ve completed are the Pride Bush, Pride Shoes, and Pride Circle.
The center is made out of countless French knots with 2 strands, the petals are a blanket stitch with 3 strands.
The Process
Transfer
As it usually goes with embroidery projects, I started by transferring the pattern to the fabric. I used my trusted technique for this type of fabric, copying directly from my iPad onto the fabric. To make the transfer process easier, I used masking tape to create some friction on the screen.
Stitching the center
French knots are a tedious stitch for filling areas, but the texture and finished look are completely worth it. I start by going around the border and then filling in the area. With the center area filled, I knew exactly how long the blanket stitch for the petals needs to be.
Stitching the petals
Using a satin stitch or a blanket stitch for the petals is a personal preference. I went for the blanket stitch because I love the rim it creates at the top of the stitch. While stitching, I made sure to leave minimal space between the stitches to completely fill the area. I began with red at the top and then went clockwise to fill in all the separate areas.
