Sometimes live feels like nothing can go right. I went through one those phases recently. None of my crafting projects turned out how I wanted, had some rough weeks at work, and there were struggles in my family. Those phases feel very draining, and I couldn‘t find any creative spark to tackle a new project (it actually made me more upset).
I reached the point where I was ready to take a break from any creative craft and just let the storm pass. There’s the saying that creativity strikes when you least expect it, and for me, this was that moment. I decided to take back control and channel my frustration into a new project. This was how „Blame it on Mercury“ was born.
To be completely honest, I don‘t know much about astrology, but I know that Mercury Retrograde is supposed to bring bad luck and I can just blame the past few on weeks a small planet.
This project was a born out of frustration and sometimes you just need someone or something you can blame for a series of unfortunate events.
Since live was already rough when I came up with that idea, I wasn’t aiming to get extra points for technicalities. If you want to make this project yourself, you just need to know two stitches:
- Whipped Back Stitch for the Planet in the middle
- Chain Stitch for the Lettering
Mercury
I tried to look up reference images of Mercury, but it seems like there are different interpretations for its colors. Most images show various tones of grey, red, brown. The craters felt like a nice touch to clearly identify it as a planet and add some details.
You can embroider the plantet‘s lines in any order you prefer. Since it is just a bunch of lines, it order doesn‘t matter. I started with the outline, then moved on to the face and finished with the craters. For the craters, I completed the whipped stitch under the first section to ensure the circles are fully closed with no visible start or finish gap.
Lettering
I really took my time with the letters. If they are off too much, they look wrong or, in the worst case, become unreadable. The chain stitch helps here because it captures curves really nicely. For neat, sharp corners you can simply start a new chain.
With the lettering done, the project is finshed.
